Hi LeeAnn, I really enjoy reading the 6-word memoirs. This one: "Goth is me. Parents don't accept. -Monica" stood out to me especially because I was "goth" (and still am, in some ways) as a young person too. Please pass on to Monica: Hey Monica, I'm 40 years old and still love all of my favorite bands (Siouxsie, Cure, etc.) from when I was called "goth" as a young person in the 80s. My family didn't accept my choice in music, dress, or friends either. That really stunk for me. I remember one time in particular when my mom refused to take me out to dinner with her and my kid brother because I was dressed in all black and wearing combat boots. That was very hurtful to me. I also remember how great my friends were, how they loved to read and talk about interesting things like art and traveling, etc. We were definitely some of the smartest kids at our school, but lots of folks didn't give us the chance to shine because of their prejudices. As I've grown up I realized that prejudice against people, including goths, band kids, Black folks, over weight people, Mexicans, etc. is terrible no matter which group you are a part of (and most of us are a part of many groups!). My unsolicited advice to you is: stay true to yourself and know that being goth is more than music, clothes, etc. it is really more of a punk rock sensibility which to me equals looking at the world with an open mind, being brave, and being accepting of other folks' differences as you would want them to accept you--especially your folks. Be patient with them and I'm sure they will come around. If they don't, then its up to you which is more important--your own culture or being a part of theirs while possibly compromising your own. Take care Monica. Sincerely, GNA
